ABOUT CAMILLE

IMG_1524_jpg.JPG

Camille Buchanan spent most of her childhood in California, but spent some of her younger years living in many different locations as her family made the moves necessary for her father's quickly budding career in television journalism. Instead of enrolling her and her brother in new schools every time they moved, her parents decided to maintain some consistency by home-schooling. In hindsight, this was Camille's first exposure to a truth she holds dear - that when a child's interests and strengths are allowed to guide learning and serve as the foundation for an individualized approach to education, magical things happen for a young person's self-concept and educational development.

Camille is passionate about addressing the challenges her students face in the school setting while working with them (and other allied professionals) to harness their strengths and interests in a way that facilitates their growth and confidence.

Of profound importance to Camille are issues of education equity, social & racial justice, and the ways these systems interact to result in the unjust enforcement of our laws and the school-to-prison pipeline. When she is not working with private practice clients, she serves as a volunteer math teacher delivering differentiated education to incarcerated students inside San Quentin. This is part of Mt Tamalpias' Associate's Degree Program (formerly known as the Prison University Project). She has also served as a coach in their recently developed Life Skills workshops for formerly incarcerated alumni of the program.

And when she's not doing that, she's probably hanging with her beloved doggo pal, tending to her indoor plants, buying a plant she doesn't need, or hours deep in the latest creative project!
